As the 2024/25 academic year draws to a close, we bid farewell to Diego Castro Freire, who has spent the past four months contributing to the CAMELIA project with dedication and strong commitment.
CAMELIA — CAsos prácticos sobre el Marco Ético y Legal de la Inteligencia Artificial (Practical Cases on the Ethical and Legal Framework for Artificial Intelligence) — is a challenge-based learning initiative. It aims to equip Bachelor’s and Master’s students with the tools to critically and responsibly examine the use of AI in real-world scenarios.
Diego has helped with creating three practical cases and three use cases that will be incorporated into seven (7) subjects and four (4) study programs across four (4) centers within UPM.
The use cases address timely and complex issues and encourage debate and discussion, and include:
- Automated price prediction and setting mechanisms in real estate
- Content ownership and rights in the era of generative AI
- Data and intellectual property protection
The practical cases provide hands-on engagement with ethical dilemmas in AI design and assessment, including:
- Identifying and addressing bias in recidivism prediction algorithms
- Enhancing transparency and explainability in credit scoring systems
- Choosing appropriate data sources vs. using entire datasets and filtering outliers during ML model fine-tuning
A big thank-you to Diego for his excellent work. Now it’s over to professors in UPM’s innovation group in AI Ethics to bring these resources into AI Ethics courses and help shape the next generation of responsible digital engineers.
